Staying connected with Dr. Cottingham

At Cottingham Orthodontics, we embrace technology, whether it’s through the innovative orthodontic treatments Dr. Cottingham offers, our interactive website, or our Facebook fan page. As you can probably tell, we love connecting with our patients online, whether it’s by sharing news on our blog or communicating ideas on our fan page. For social media to work, however, we understand that conversation is vital, and that’s why we invite you to join in and tell us what’s on your mind. Although social networks are hugely popular these days, we know they’re unpredictable and ever-changing.

While we take a little time to research how to best use social media, we thought we’d ask you, our loyal patients: How would you like us to use our social networks? What would you like us to share on our blog? Please post your thoughts on Facebook or give us a call!

Hey Dr. Cottingham, when should I replace my toothbrush?

Great question. Fall is here, and with it the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. Cottingham and our staff will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming re-infected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

Hope this tip helps! Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook.

Dr. Cottingham at The Fight For Life Foundation's "Fright Night"

Dr. Karen Cottingham and friends celebrated Halloween by attending a "Fright Night" event for The Fight For Life Foundation, formerly known as the Marlin Jackson Fight For Life Foundation, established in 2007 by Marlin Jackson to help inner city and low income youth make positive life changing decisions.

In 2010, Antoine Bethea (smile courtesy of Dr. C) and Melvin Bullitt of the Indianapolis Colts decided to team up with Jackson and formed the Fight for Life Foundation. The choices children make can have an impact on them for the rest of their lives. Any foundation that helps children succeed is always of interest to Dr. Cottingham. She believes that changing the smile of a child also has a great positive impact. Several Colts players were in attendance to support their friends and the foundation.

Halloween Do's and Dont's, from Cottingham Orthodontics

For parents of Cottingham Orthodontics patients worried about their kids going overboard on candies this weekend, sugar and other sweets, Halloween is a dreaded annual event (no pun intended).

All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as your braces! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! Sour and fruity candy, such as Starburst and Skittles, are the worst for your child’s teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which is known to ruin enamel. In addition, we also want your child to steer clear of sticky, chewy, gummy and nutty goodies.

Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists recommend softer treats for those with braces, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your-mouth foods. Trick-or-treaters who indulge should make sure they brush and floss between teeth, around brackets and at the gum line. If damage occurs, call Dr. Cottingham or your general dentist as soon as possible.

We hope everyone has a fun, safe and scary Halloween!

Dr. Cottingham is happy to be sponsoring a table at the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s 5th Annual Evening with the Stars gala next Monday, October 18th.

Cottingham Orthodontics are excited to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Indiana Region. Dr. Karen Cottingham and team support National Orthodontic Health Month!

Happy Wednesday! October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and our staff at Cottingham Orthodontics wanted to remind our patients to be careful when they bite into their treats this Halloween season. Dr. Cottingham wants you to remember that caramels, taffy, nuts, bubble gum, popcorn kernels and suckers (among others) are some of the foods you should be avoiding while you’re wearing braces! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time!

Of course, National Orthodontic Health Month and the Halloween season don’t have to be completely treat-less. Check out these delicious braces-friendly recipes, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call, ask us on Facebook or ask Dr. Cottingham during your next visit at our convenient offices in Indianapolis or Avon!

Emily shadows Dr. Cottingham!

A local student was in Dr. Cottingham's office last week to shadow Dr. C and learn more about orthodontics as a profession. Emily Cloncs (left) is a Danville High School freshman. Dr. Cottingham enjoys when students come in to our office to shadow and her, and loves that they are interested in orthodontics!

Dr. Cottingham wants to know: Are you wearing your mouth guard?

With fall sports under way for a lot of our patients, Dr. Cottingham thought today would be a good time to once again remind our young athletes in braces to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in sports this fall.

You should ALWAYS wear a mouth guard when playing sports, but especially this month. Why? September is National Childhood Injury Prevention Month. The month may almost be over, but it’s still important to bring that mouth guard whenever you’re headed to practice or to the big game this fall.

Here’s why:

More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt. Despite the risks, many kids are still not wearing mouth guards and facial protection during games and practices.

Dr. Cottingham and our entire staff at Cottingham Orthodontics encourage you to head over to the American Association of Orthodontists' website for a quick primer on the importance of mouth guards and protecting your mouth.

We hope this helps you remember to always wear a mouth guard and other forms of protective gear when participating in fall sports! We encourage you to give us a call if you have any questions! Have a great rest of the week!

Ask Dr. Cottingham: Which foods should I avoid while wearing braces?

There are a variety of foods Dr. Karen Cottingham wants you to avoid while you're wearing braces. Some foods can occasionally damage braces, but certain foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces. If you’re wearing braces, you should avoid starch, sugar and gummy foods, as these foods can be difficult to remove during brushing. Foods that are high in sugar and starch tend to cause plaque, cavities and even tooth decay.

Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods you should Avoid
• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots
• Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

If you have any questions on which foods you should be avoiding and why, we invite you to give us a call or ask our staff during your next visit! We also encourage you to check out this helpful article, courtesy of Parenthood.com.

What's going on at Cottingham Orthodontics?

This week, Dr. Karen Cottingham and our team thought we'd give you a quick update about our office! Most schools started recently here in Indiana, and our staff delivered baskets of travel-sized hand sanitizers to area school teachers to promote good health and hygiene.

And, football season is right around the corner (Sunday, as a matter of fact). As always, we will be cheering on the Colts this season, and this week, as the Colts open their regular season on the road against division opponent Houston. Look for our staff to wear our Colts jerseys in support of the team. We wear them on Thursdays, unless the team is playing on Monday. Go Colts!!!

When should you call Cottingham Orthodontics?

Great question! Our good friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have put together a helpful list that outlines when you should call Dr. Karen Cottingham. Here are some early warning signs indicating it’s time to check in with us at either our Indianapolis or Avon office this fall:

1. Early or late loss of baby teeth

4. Finger sucking or other oral habits
5. Crowding, misplaced or blocked-out teeth

6. Jaws that shift, make sounds, protrude or retrude
7. Speech difficulty
8. Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth
9. Protruding teeth
10. Teeth that meet in an abnormal way or don’t meet at all

Dr. Cottingham wants to know: Do you know where your retainer is?

If you’ve recently completed treatment at Cottingham Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you again! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Karen Cottingham will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After your braces come off, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Cottingham is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. Here are a few things to remember when you receive your retainers:

* Wear your retainers full time, until Dr. Cottingham instructs otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.

* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)

* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.

* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.

* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.

* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).

We hope this helps! You can always give us a call if you have any questions!

The importance of regular checkups, from Dr. Cottingham

Our staff at Cottingham Orthodontics want to know: Are you brushing your teeth twice a day during your orthodontic treatment? If yes, that’s what we want to hear! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every six months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting our office, of course). An oral checkup is vital for maintaining good oral health for kids with and without braces.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth during your treatment.

During an oral exam, the dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, let Dr. Cottingham or one of our staff members know during your next visit with us, and we will provide a few great references in the greater Indianapolis area!

Ask Dr. Cottingham: What can Invisalign® do for my oral health?

We’ve discussed the power of Invisalign treatment in a previous post, and today thought we’d share the oral health benefits of wearing Invisalign’s clear aligners.

When considering treatment options, patients often ask us about the advantages of Invisalign treatment. Just like traditional braces, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign than you may know. Invisalign, a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, not only help straighten your teeth, but, just like traditional braces, they can also improve your oral health. Here’s how:

Healthy gums: Regardless of treatment methods, straight teeth and a proper bite allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore, brushing and flossing are somewhat easier than conventional braces. This can improve your ability to maintain a healthy mouth during treatment. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.

Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

Dr. Cottingham is a certified Invisalign provider here in Indianapolis, Avon and surrounding communities. If you have any questions about Invisalign, please give us a call at (317) 202-1873 to schedule your initial complimentary consultation. We also invite you to post your question on our interactive Facebook page!

Happy Thursday!

Dr. Cottingham, helping you save face this summer

With summer 2010 in full swing, Dr. Karen Cottingham would like to remind all our athletes in treatment to be extra careful when out on the field. After all, most mouth and facial injuries occur during the summer months.

If you'll be playing sports this summer, it's important that you consult Dr. Cottingham for special precautions, such as wearing a mouth guard. Mouth guards are advised for playing spring sports such as baseball, soccer, rugby, lacrosse and many more.

In case of any accident involving your face, we want you to check your mouth and appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances are damaged, please schedule an appointment to see your general dentist or Dr. Cottingham immediately. And don’t forget to ask us at your next scheduled appointment—Dr. Cottingham will be more than happy to provide a proper mouth guard for any patient in treatment!

Our staff at Cottingham Orthodontics will tell you that only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries this summer. Please give us a call at our convenient offices in Indianapolis or Avon if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment at our office.

We hope you’re having a great summer!

Welcome, Dr. Mitchell!

Indianapolis orthodontist Dr. Karen Cottingham routinely invites new orthodontists from around the region into her practice to allow them the opportunity to see an established practice in action. It helps the new orthodontist understand how a practice operates and how staff members interact with patients. It also gives them the chance to ask questions and seek advice from an experienced orthodontist. Dr. Cottingham is proud to have another orthodontist—Dr. Morgan Mitchell from Prospect, Kentucky—observe her practice in action next week.

Dr. Cottingham enjoys having others observe her practice, such as high school students looking to fulfill career day requirements. Many times, these students have an interest in dentistry or orthodontics and want to learn more about it. On many occasions, these students are patients of Dr. Cottingham. She has also had college students and dental students in her practice, as well as anyone interested in specializing in the ever-exciting world of orthodontics.

We look forward to seeing Dr. Mitchell! If you’re in for an appointment next week, be sure to say hi to her!

If you have thought about observing a caring, lighthearted and smart practice at work, we invite you to join us for day. Please give us a call for more information!

Ask Dr. Cottingham: When should my child come in for a consultation?

Indianapolis orthodontist Dr. Karen Cottingham and our staff know that sometimes, parents assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit Cottingham Orthodontics for a complimentary consultation, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started sooner. In fact, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that every child has an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven.

You’re probably thinking: “Ok, so what’s so great about age seven? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for Dr. Cottingham to make a determination about whether there are any problems. At that age, the first molars have come in, providing an opportunity for Dr. Cottingham to check for malocclusion, or what we call “bad bite.”

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes for people: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future, as well as fewer expenses. For others, a healthy prognosis provides people a peace of mind.

We want to assure you that Dr. Cottingham gives very realistic evaluations at that age, and in fact, most cases can wait. At our office, parents will always get a fair evaluation and only the most necessary of cases will require treatment.

If your child is nearing his or her seventh birthday, we encourage you to visit our office for a consultation. Please give us a call at our convenient offices in Indianapolis or Avon to schedule an appointment.

You can look up your appointment times and all of your account details at your convenience, all from the comfort of your own home! "Making payments online is much easier. Especially when using my health savings account."

Cottingham Orthodontics, supporting National Smile Month

We hope you enjoyed the long holiday weekend! Now that we’re in June, Dr. Cottingham and team thought we’d tell you June is National Smile Month, and a good time to remind all our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your visits to Cottingham Orthodontics.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many years to come:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Here's a helpful video showing you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss everyday to thoroughly clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment.
* Visit your dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call at (317) 202-1873 at our Indianapolis office or (317) 204-4109 at our Avon location!

We want everyone to get out there and share your beautiful smiles with the world!

Dr. Cottingham supports local schools!

We thought we'd share with our patients a recent letter Dr. Karen Cottingham received from Westside Christian School in Indianapolis. In March, Dr. Cottingham, who supports schools and programs in the greater Indianapolis area, made a contribution to the 8th Annual “Taste of Italy” Dinner/Auction at the school. We are glad to hear the auction was able to raise $10,000 that night!

Here’s what Mary Valentine, who sits on the school’s committee, wrote in her letter:

Dear Dr. Cottingham,

We want to express our sincere appreciation for your generosity in support of our 8th Annual “Taste of Italy” Dinner/Auction held on Saturday, March 20, 2010. Through the hard work and efforts of so many individuals and the donations we received for our fundraising event, our goal of having an evening that included food, fun, fellowship, and fund-raising was met. As such, we are proud to announce we were able to raise $10,000 for our school. The success would not have been possible without your help. Thank you.

Westside Christian School actively aspires to help each child grow in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to have the life skills necessary to experience success, and to serve God and others with Christian character and academic excellence. The funds raised will assist with this mission.

Once again, thank you for supporting us and believing in our school. Westside Christian School is very blessed for the continued support we receive in educating the future. Your donation will make a difference in shaping young lives that will one day be our church, community, state, and possibly, our world leaders. We pledge to continue developing individuals of Christian character with Christian values.

Sincerely,

Mary Valentine

Ask Dr. Cottingham: Is Invisalign® for me?

Our staff at Cottingham Orthodontics will tell you that part of what makes Invisalign clear aligners "work" is that the treatment is customizable for pretty much anyone's teeth. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing Dr. Karen Cottingham does is take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, Dr. Cottingham and our team look at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next we use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. And since the aligners are virtually invisible, nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Dr. Cottingham is a certified Invisalign provider in Indianapolis and Avon. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment at Cottingham Orthodontics, please give us a call!

What does May mean for Dr. Cottingham?

May is here, and it's one of Dr. Cottingham’s favorite times of year. Not only does it welcome warmer weather to Indiana, it is also time for the Indianapolis 500 and all the festivities around it. Dr. Cottingham particularly enjoys the Jeans and Jewels fundraiser each year. Last year, the event raised money for The Indy Family Foundation, Inc., and the Women’s Fund of Central Indiana. Many of the IZOD IndyCar Series drivers attend the event and were happy to take pictures with Dr. Cottingham, including Dancing With The Stars and Indy 500 champion Helio Castroneves. We hope to see you at the Indianapolis 500 this year. Check out the latest Indy 500 promo video on YouTube!

Cottingham Orthodontics at the Colts training facility!

Just days before the NFL Draft last week, Dr. Cottingham and her staff were treated to a tour of the Indianapolis Colts training facility in Indianapolis. The Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center is located just a couple of miles from Dr. Cottingham’s Indianapolis office. Defensive Backs coach and current patient, Alan Williams, was gracious enough to provide this unique experience.

While on tour, they met Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell, who was very nice and also very funny. He autographed some pictures for the staff and Dr. Cottingham. They were also fortunate enough to run into patient and Linebacker, #50, Philip Wheeler. Philip posed for a picture with his favorite Orthodontic team. Dr. Cottingham and her staff are so thankful for the chance to have toured such a great football facility. They really enjoyed getting the “behind-the-scenes” tour and wish the team all the best for the upcoming 2010 season. For more photos, head over to our Facebook fan page!

GO COLTS!!!

"I'm an adult. I'm probably too old for braces, right?"

Absolutely not. In fact, our staff at Cottingham Orthodontics read a fascinating statistic: the number of adults getting braces has actually climbed 24 percent since 1996! Yes, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: people want to look and feel great.

In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or that promotion, adults are choosing—wisely, we might add—to invest in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment with Dr. Cottingham can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Cottingham would love to have you visit for a consultation. Please give us a call to set one up and enjoy your week!

Dr. Cottingham supports Special Olympics of Indiana, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Riley Hospital for Children, Sheltering Wings (Hendricks County domestic abuse shelter), the donation of dental services to underprivileged children, as well as multiple community, school, band and sports programs.

In March, Cottingham Orthodontics was the official "Smile" sponsor of the 2010 St. Richard's School Regalia. We are happy to announce the event raised more than $107,000, with Dr. Cottingham donating a full comprehensive treatment for the school’s event.

If you have any questions about our other work here in Indianapolis, please feel free to give us a call. We look forward to sharing more of our involvement in the coming months. Happy Monday!

Ask Dr. Cottingham: Why are straight teeth so important?

Some people wonder why Indianapolis orthodontist Dr. Karen Cottingham and our team work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at Cottingham Orthodontics can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean! We want to give you and your family the total orthodontic experience you expect, with the amazing smiles you deserve! If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a consultation. Dr. Cottingham can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment at Cottingham Orthodontics.

Happy Monday!
